The Position: 

A rare opportunity has opened up for an experienced food and drink editor to lead the SCMP’s coverage of the subject area. The successful candidate will produce industry leading content cross print and digital, including for the web site, the daily broadsheet newspaper and the newspaper’s flagship Sunday magazine.

They will have a finger on the pulse of the food and drink sector, producing content with local, regional and global appeal. A thorough knowledge of local and international cuisine is required and the new incumbent will be expected to reimagine and reshape the newspaper’s coverage of the subject area for the digital age, while also providing ambassadorship for the newspaper within the industry.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Commission and create top quality food and drink content to drive reader engagement both online and in print.
  • Design digital content that will drive online traffic locally, regionally and internationally, meeting demanding growth targets as the SCMP continues to expand its global reach and building brand loyalty and reader retention.
  • Produce print stories for the daily newspaper and the Sunday magazine.
  • Oversee accuracy of copy, editing, rewriting and fact checking as necessary, while always being mindful of potential legal issues.
  • Build and manage a network of freelancers.
  • Commission relevant photography and illustrations in liaison with the photo and graphics desks.
  • Ensure deadlines are met, maintaining a steady flow of stories as required and collaborating with the Culture Desk, Post Magazine, Digital and Print newspaper teams.

Job Requirements:

  • Applications will be entertained only from experienced food and drink editors with extensive experience in a newspaper, magazine or online environment.
  • Management experience is desirable.
  • Excellent content judgment and the ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • A deep knowledge of food and drink in Hong Kong, the region, and internationally.
  • Must be meticulous with facts and able to work under pressure to tight deadlines.
  • Top notch English writing with an imaginative flair for engaging copy and the ability to generate strong story ideas.
  • A self-starter with initiative and the ability to anticipate problems and prioritize tasks.
  • Video production and social media experience is desirable.
  • Fluency in Chinese and Cantonese desirable.
